can call an injury. Tooth fissure refers to the natural structure of molars.
But this natural structure can develop plaque and other dental problems such as

What are pits and
fissures?
The surface of molars is irregular. But this irregularity is
something we need because it helps in chewing the foods well. This irregular
shape contains dips and valleys which are commonly referred to as pits and
fissures. Now, the patterns of these pits and fissures can vary from tooth to
tooth. Some teeth may have deeper pits and fissures while some may not have
that deeper.
Although these pits and fissures are necessary for teeth in
order to grind foods well, these pits can collect foods particles and debris,

to settle in and do the damage. When it comes to cleaning such surfaces, you
will need to work a bit harder with your brush in order to make the bristles go
a bit deeper. Hence, it would be pretty difficult for you to clean those pits
in the molars.
It is particularly difficult for the children to clean their
teeth. First molars usually start developing at the age of six. And these
molars are supposed to remain there in the mouth for a lifetime. Now the
presence of these pits and fissures can lead to tooth decay which may be
treatable but it reduces the lifespan of that tooth.
Application of
sealants
The fissure sealant is an amazing method of protecting molar
from developing plaque and tooth decay during childhood. The sealant is mainly
a coating which is applied on the chewing surface of the molars, mainly
covering the pattern of fissures. This sealant acts as a barrier between tooth
enamel and bacteria. The sealant settles in the fissures and blocks ways for
the plaque, food particles, debris and bacteria to settle in.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
sealants are aimed at providing protection against long-term dental damage. The
damages we are talking about mainly include tooth decay, cavities, and
conditions that raise the need for dental restoration.
One thing worth mentioning here is that dental sealant is
not a substitute for daily dental care even though it effectively prevents dental
issues. So, you need to make sure that you brush and floss on daily basis in
order to prevent dental issues which can arise due to carelessness in
maintaining dental hygiene.
